How to Change Fuel Filter on 2003 Mercury Mountaineer

Procedure to Change Fuel Filter


The fuel door is opened on the vehicle and make sure that you remove the gas cap very slowly to relive the pressure in fuel tank. The power distribution center is located after lifting the hood. The fuel pump relay is identified after removing the cover. The engine is started and let the engine to run for a while. After turning the vehicle to “off” position, remove the negative cable in the battery with the help of a socket wrench and the cable is isolated away from other metal contacts.

A wheel block is placed in front of front tires. These blocks are firmly placed. The rear end is raised with a hydraulic jack. The jack stand is placed under the rail on both rear and forward tires. Then hydraulic jack is lowered until the vehicle gets completely rest on jack stands. Now slide under the vehicle and find the fuel filter. The fuel filter is covered with the protective shield.

The metal catch pan is placed directly underneath the vehicles fuel filter. Couple of small tabs are pinched together.

Removing the Other Fuel Line

Repeat the same procedure and the 2nd rear fuel line is removed. The fuel line present at the front is removed by lifting the 2nd inch long latch. The disconnect tool is placed around the fuel line.

Next, loosen the bolts that support the clip holding; remove the fuel filter from the vehicle and install the new fuel filter by reversing the removal procedure.

The protective shield’s bolts are tightened to 15 ft-lbs. after installing the fuel filters, and finally you must watch out for leaks.

If everything was done to perfection, you new fuel filter should work smoothly.
